Well, Detectve Comics stories crossover with Batman, you you have to get that series too. & you’ll need Legends of the Dark Knight, Shadow of the Bat, Batman Confidential, Gotham Central, Gotham Knights,…they all tie in. Then there are all the mini series & graphic novels.

Here, this is the best guide I’ve ever come across. http://www.comicvine.com/batman/29-1699/issues-cover/

Anything that happened before the 80s is going to be corny because they are campy Golden, Silver, & Bronze age comics. You only want the Dark & Modern age comics. I’d start at the 50 year mark, where “Crisis on Infinate Earths” left off, at 1985 OR after Frank Miller wrote “The Dark Knight Returns” in 1986.

Crisis On Infinite Earths, was DC Comics attempt to clean up years of stories, into one streamlined Earth/Universe, retconning many things & saying they happened in another universe, meaning nothing before it is relevent to today’s Batman. I guess this is when continuity started to become important.

The Dark Knight Returns: The world famous 4 issue mini series by Frank Miller in the late 80’s which returned Batman to the darkness that he was commonly known for. This miniseries/graphic novel is Elseworlds (parallel universe), but the grumpier brooding Batman was popular enough that DC wanted to stick with that kind of Batman.

Detective Comics:
—————————-
487: First issue of the 80s.
550: After Crisis.
567: After DKR.

Batman:
————-
319: First issue of the 80s.
383: After Crisis.
397: After DKR.
